In the first half of the XVIIIth century, Rouen's reputation for the production of fine porcelain is second to none.

In 1698 a period od prosperity began which saw the arrival of new potters workshops.

In 1710 five workshops were producing fine pottery, Faubourg Saint Severs.

In 1720, the number had risen to ten! In all there were 22 producers in Rouen in the XVIIIth century.

During the first half of the century the art reached its peak with original and caracteristic designs. Rouen porcelain or faience is typically pre-fired ans then dipped in a tin enamel solution.

Traditional designs and motifs are then hand painted.

Oxyde based colours cannot be corrected or altered..

Lastly the piece is fired a second time with the kiln reaching 980°
for 8 hours. The enamel vitrifies and the colors take on their hue
